Overview
“Why do I have to learn this?” Students in middle and high school classrooms echo this statement all the time. As teachers, we hope to teach you lifelong skills such as reading, writing, problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making, collaboration, and other essential skills needed for life after academia through a specific subject area.
This assignment will give you an opportunity to see the role of literacy (with all of its meanings) in society. You will begin to explore education and literacy as a source of power and indispensable component to your success. At the same time, you will observe and reflect on the role of literacy in your local community and your potential career. As you engage in community relationships, you will explore your preconceived notions about life after classroom learning and begin to take steps toward a potential internship.
As a semester long project, this assignment will require that you remain organized, proactive, and prepared each day. You will be creating and maintaining documents, as well as relationships, throughout the semester that will aid in reaching your future goals and connecting your education with the real world.
